Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club and Northern Marianas College are collaborating on a film trilogy entitled “ISLA” that will be written and directed by Theatre Club founder, College president, and award-winning filmmaker, Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD. The films will explore themes of faith, hope, and love against the backdrop of the Marianas. Auditions for the first film in the trilogy will take place this Saturday at the College.
Deleon Guerrero has been waiting a long time to take on this project. “While I’ve been telling stories on stage and in film for over 30 years now, it has taken me this long to finally feel ready to tackle these particular stories.”
Deleon Guerrero earned an advanced certificate in digital filmmaking from New York University and has produced over 50 stage shows and films, including nine stories adapted from “We Drank Our Tears”, a 2004 oral history of the civilian experience of World War II battles on Saipan and Tinian, published by Pacific STAR Young Writers Foundation. Films in that series have been screened at film festivals around the world and have won multiple awards, including Best of Festival from Guam International Film Festival and a Golden Latte Stone Award at the Marianas International Film Festival.
As he moves forward with “ISLA”, Deleon Guerrero said, “I am really excited to now work with both Mount Carmel and the College to bring these next films to life.” He added, “I especially invite the entire community to audition for the films because we need everyone’s help to tell these stories about our islands.”
The first audition for “ISLA” will be held this Saturday, September 18, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Northern Marianas College in Room J-15. Please complete the form ahead of the audition at http://tinyurl.com/islamovie. Also, remember to follow all COVID-19 mitigation protocols when on campus, including wearing a mask, completing temperature checks at designated stations, and maintaining physical distancing of six feet from others.
