Bringing song and dance to the stage with the MCS Theatre Club production, “True Colors”
Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club is all set to present its next theatrical production, “True Colors”. The show is an original jukebox musical about a girl on the autism spectrum who struggles to find her place and her voice at a new school. As a jukebox musical, the show will blend an original script with pop music favorites from the 1970s through the present, including the show’s title song from Cyndi Lauper.
As a musical, singing takes center stage for many of the scenes. Leading those scenes is the show’s vocal director, Amber Mendiola Romolor. She said, “being a part of the production has truly been a humbling and amazing experience.” As she put it, “The crew are so creative and talented, the story will pull at your heartstrings, and the way the songs are performed will definitely leave you speechless.”
An accomplished singer herself, Romolor was honored to follow in the footsteps of her sister, Anna Rose Deleon Guerrero, who served as vocal director for the Theatre Club’s production of “The Sound of Music” almost exactly one year ago. Romolor added, “I'm extremely excited for the community to experience this production!”
In addition to singing, dancing plays an important role in the show. For the lead choreographer, senior, and Theatre Club veteran, Donnie James Jr. Calma Militante, it was an opportunity he jumped at. After acting in numerous productions, he was excited to contribute his creative ideas to the show. He said, “I am elated to have orchestrated such a beautiful composition.” As far as the show’s focus on colors, Militante welcomed the challenge. As he put it, “Choreographing for this production has had me adapt my style to the colorful themes presented.”
The script for “True Colors” was written by Theatre Club founder and Northern Marianas College president, Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD. The show is directed by senior and Theatre Club veteran Kyla Cabrera, who also co-directed the club’s production of “The Sound of Music” last year. Junior Bernice Shane Sabino, who played Maria in“The Sound of Music”, is back to play another lead role, this time as Iris, the lead character.
“True Colors” runs Friday, January 27, and Saturday, January 28, at the Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret with doors opening at 6:30 pm each night. Tickets are $25 for limited premium seats and $10 for general admission and may be purchased at the Mount Carmel School Business Office.
The production is made possible by support from the CNMI Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the CNMI Council for Arts and Culture with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
