MCS Students Win
Patriot's Pen Contest
Mount Carmel School proudly recognizes her students Henry Yeom (left), Stephen Yeom (right), and Kelly Zheng (center) recently for winning first, second, and third place in the 2020 Patriot Pen’s Contest.
The Patriot Pen’s Contest is an annual academic competition offered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars that provides students the opportunity to express their patriotism through essay writing or public speaking. This particular contest was offered to students in grades six through eight and were challenged with the prompt, “What is patriotism to me?” in four-hundred words. Winners of the “post-level” contest in Saipan earned the qualification to compete with other students in the district-level in the Marianas.
First place winner and MCS sixth-grader Henry Yeom shared, “In my essay, I wrote about wanting to help my country and the ways that I currently do that even in sixth-grade. After transferring from a different school, I joined clubs at MCS that I believe can help me reach my goal to become a supreme court justice. I believe that patriotism is about doing what we can to help our community in our own ways.”
“I applied for this contest because I wanted to challenge myself and share my thoughts on what it means to be patriotic,” shared second place winner and MCS seventh-grader Kelly Zheng. “While English may not be my first language, I wanted to express my own thoughts on what patriotism means to me and how we can participate actively.”
MCS sixth-grader and third place winner Stephen Yeom shared, “I wanted to participate in the contest because I was interested in talking about the importance of patriotism and how it helps us give to the community and become better people.”
Mount Carmel School President Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero shared, “Given the political climate in our nation’s capital, expressing the importance of patriotism is more important than ever and we are very proud of all our students who participated in this recent competition. What assures me that many of our students will grow to become productive citizens is their ability to recognize that patriotism is more than loving your country, it’s about what you can do for your country and community.”
